And my system is slow as hell. Basically, even though I have 4GB of ram, since vista is using so much cache 1. Since I runa server already 4GB needs to be in memory running most of the time.
See the problem? So it creats a unresponsive system. The only time I was able to release cache memory, was to open 30 IE windows, and then close them all. But then the program was, my system was slow as hell until all the important things were swapped back into memory.
Also if you have a really fast hard drive raid , or SSD, I would rather use that as a cache, then fill up my memory with prefetch. These flush out unused things from physical to cache or virtual and leave you lots of physical RAM. Processes running Office Office Exchange Server.

It is well said but it is totaly wrong. Simple scenario: I have vista with 3gb RAM. Vista with nothing running just takes 1. Now I can go back to my ram allocation of 2Gb start the VM again.
Just too much hastle. It is just easier to go back to XP and do not have that pain any more. Thursday, August 14, AM. Sunday, February 17, AM. Is there any way to disable caching? I'm perfectly fine letting SuperFetch have its way with my system memory. The question shouldn't be "Why does Vista use all my memory? Maybe the rules were different before 2 gigabytes was a mainstream memory configuration.

If I lauch Steam first it starts up fine. This is because the program is reading how much memory is "Free" and Vista does its best to cache every MB it can. I have 2GB and about MB is cached it will show up as not used in the task manager because it will be freed as needed, but you can see Free and Cached if you look below the graph.
Also your memory problems could be related to DEP, if you are having memory problems with a specific program then disable DEP for that program. Add the programs that are having memory errors to the list. Also there is a registry hack that lets you prefetch boot-up data only but this might not help your performance at all. Also if you have a flash drive laying around try readyboost. Go to msconfig and deselect some of the processes in there which are useless. Than don't use the stupid glass effect.
Try the windows classic theme, or try some none-glass fx or transparent themes. I've given you your own thread. That seems kinda high. Can you post a screenshot of your running processes? Should look something like this PC eye banned. It is too high to start with! The basic installation should see only mb. With a few basics on plus a few average programs you still shouldn't be hitting the 1gb mark.
OS Master New Member. Yeah, we need to see what processes are taking up the most memory. If you want to reduce the amount of memory consumed by Vista, try disabling themes. It's a multi-step process, which usually involves switching to the Classic theme, "Adjust[ing] for best performance", and disabling and stopping the Themes service.
There's been a few different blogs on how to improve Vista's performance by doing this and that. Well, that is how Vista technically works. It caches things out to the RAM and to virtual memory on a constant basis.
When more memory is requested windows pages off the cache to virtual memory or a readyboost flash drive to free physical memory. The best way to judge subjective performance is to use the machine for about week to see how it works. I am not saying Vista is not more resource intensive than XP because it obviously is.
Just that the metric you are useing to measure RAM useage does not mean anything. So whats the use of having huge amounts of ram yet used by none. Bog , Nov 29, Thanks for the info. It does seem that Vista handles memory much better. Maybe my hardware isn't good enough to handle this. I usually install Vista x64 from now on, but I used to try x Bog: Yeah the video drivers might be a problem.
I'm not sure, I've tried almost everything. I could go out and try every driver that might work, but then the extra step of changing PowerMizer will take a while. Any recommendations for my M card? How about cleaning out your video card drivers and then reinstalling them?
Sounds like you never cleaned out your previous drivers before you installed new ones. I did, I uninstalled my drivers, used Driver Sweeper, and then installed the new ones as always.
